Sourav Ganguly lauds Rohit Sharma’s ability to score ODI double hundreds

first_imgRohit Sharma’s love-affair with scoring double hundreds in one day international continued when he smashed his third in the second match against Sri Lanka at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Wednesday.Rohit blasted his way to a majestic 208 not out off 153 balls as he became the only batsman to score three double centuries in the 50-over format.Rohit’s sensational knock also powered India to a series-levelling victory after the hosts annihilated Sri Lanka by 141 runs. The series decider will be played at Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium at Visakhapatnam on December 17.Rohit had scored his first double century against Australia at Bengaluru in 2013 before he struck a world record 264 against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in 2014.Sachin Tendulkar was the first male cricketer to hit the landmark double century in 2010 while Virender Sehwag, Martin Guptill and Chris Gayle also etched their names in the record books.”What stands out to me is his consistency of getting double hundreds. The first one against Australia was a career-changing one and a batsman-changing one. When you get your first, you realise your potential and you know that you can do it again. He did that again at the Eden Gardens and got 264. I don’t think this one is a career-changing knock for him but it’s a fabulous knock because he’s got another double hundred. The best thing is his consistency of getting double hundreds which is very, very important,” Sourav Ganguly told India Today.Rohit has been in a sublime form this year and has amassed 1286 runs in the 50-over format. This was Rohit’s sixth ODI hundred of 2017 – the joint most with Virat Kohli, who is the leading run-scorer in the format.advertisementRohit, who clobbered 12 sixes and 13 fours during his gigantic innings, also surpassed Sehwag as he became the only fourth Indian batsman to score 16 centuries.”His knock against Australia in Bengaluru was a career-changing one. This year, he’s scored as many hundreds as Virat Kohli. We keep talking about Virat Kohli and how great he is in one day cricket but look at Rohit. He is no way behind, 11 hundreds in 50 odd innings (since 2015). I have always said that he’s a terrific batsman and a match-winner. Hopefully he can transform his renewed hunger for runs, his renewed ability to convert hundreds into double hundreds in the next 10 months. The shots he played was absolutely breathtaking,” Ganguly said.WATCH FULL VIDEO”Hopefully when he gets to play at the Cape Town Test, he gets a big score. And it will completely change his total career because there is now doubt about his T20 and one day abilities but I hope this will transform him as a complete player. I just can’t see such a quality player not doing well in all the three formats. He’s just 30, he has got lot of cricket left in him,” Ganguly added.Rohit, who got married to Ritika Sajdeh in 2015, was also celebrating his second wedding anniversary. His wife Ritika cheered on from the stands and was in tears when Rohit reached the landmark figure.”She was right there at the ground and she was literally in tears when he got the double hundred. These are big moment in everyone’s life. Captaining India and scoring a double hundred, how better it can be for any individual cricketer.Emotions are understandable. I am sure she has seen all three of them,” Ganguly said.AP Photolast_img
