St. Joseph High girls soccer coach Eddie Perez knew this early-season stretch would be tough. Every year, Santa Margarita and Mater Dei are the top teams in the Serra League, and performing well against them is paramount to the Jesters’ playoff chances. And with home games against each to start the league slate, the Jesters had an early opportunity to make a move. After last week’s home loss to Santa Margarita, St. Joseph scored quickly to lead visiting Mater Dei during Tuesday’s game. But after playing to a 1-1 halftime tie, the Monarchs ambushed the Jesters, scoring three goals in a seven-minute span to eventually win 4-2.
